Sidney Elementary "Walking to Wellness" Program

Press Release:
The students of Sidney Elementary anxiously await the arrival and visit of an ultra-athlete! Shannon Wehling, special education teacher, and her students were first introduced to runner Charlie Engle nearly two years ago through News-2-You. News-2-You is a weekly newspaper designed for special needs students and has been a valuable teaching tool in Mrs. Wehling's classroom. Each newspaper theme incorporates every day language arts, math, social studies and science skills. In February of 2007, the newspaper featured Charlie's great journey across the entire Sahara Desert. Charlie, along with two other men, ran across the desert for 111 days, bringing awareness to the clean water crisis in Africa. That journey was made into a documentary film produced and narrated by Oscar winner, Matt Damon and directed by James Moll. It is to be released later this month.

After completing this extraordinary run, Charlie began planning his next journey. This time, Charlie is attempting to break the record for the transcontinental run across America. The current record stands at 46 days. Charlie hopes to break the record in 45 days. In order to accomplish this, he will have to run approximately 70 miles a day! Charlie began his run in San Francisco on September 13th. He and another runner, Marshall Ullrich, hope to complete their run in New York City on October 27th. Mrs. Wehling was notified in June that Charlie's route across the country would include a stretch across Hwy 2, near Sidney, in early October! News-2-You invited their newspaper readers to help out along the way. They have been gracious enough to supply the entire elementary student body and staff with t-shirts. Mrs. Wehling's students are checking in on Charlie's progress every morning and mapping out his route. Sidney Elementary is planning on being the first students to welcome Charlie to the great state of Iowa on or about October 13th.

Recent Update: Charlie suffered an unfortunate injury in Utah and is now unable to run or even walk the route. However, he continues to support his friend Marshall in his own attempt to break the record. The injury was a big disappointment for Charlie as it takes him out of the race. Charlie is a man of determination and has now returned to the route on a bike! His voyage is a wonderful lesson about friendship and perseverance. His personal motto is "do something now". He is now focusing on raising awareness of childhood obesity along his route.

The elementary staff and students have been inspired to kick-off a "Walking to Wellness" program under the direction of physical education instructor, Donnie Sears. The elementary plans to begin their walking program on the day that Charlie passes through Sidney! For more information about News-2-You or Charlie's great adventures, visit:
